Telluride Blues and Brews Dusted Off This Mom’s Soul

“Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” Berthold Auerbach.

I passed by Between the Covers bookstore and this was the quote out front. I couldn’t think of anything better to sum up this weekend at Telluride Blues and Brews.  My weekend was supposed to be filled with casual listening, beer tastings, yummy festival food and lots of play time at the childrens’ area. Of course when you are a parent, the best laid plans…

What it actually turned out to be was a tag team effort with my husband and the people staying with us juggling sick kids. The weekend included one trip to the ER, one very persistent stomach bug, lots of tissues, children’s ibuprofen, and tissues.  But not to worry-we divided and we conquered and despite the sick kids, we managed to take in the majority of the awesome lineup at Blues and Brews.

My Blues and Brews weekend started on Thursday with a trip to the Sheridan Opera House for an early Juke Joint concert with Little Hurricane. This was a great venue to take in this up and coming band that has a lot of promise with only one record in their pocket. Friday, I really enjoyed Robert Randolph and the Family Band and also who knew that Little Feat would be so good- am I showing my age? My kids were still happy and healthy at this point and they had a blast playing in the Childrens’ area, climbing,  jumping and taking it all in.

Town Park ended Friday evening with B52’s. There were  many costumes, lots of dancing, and many happy people! The kids went home with their dad, and my next stop was the Juke Joints! I went to the Sheridan Opera House again, this time for Heartless Bastards, who set the stage for some great dancing.  March Fourth was a ton of fun to dance to also! Wahoooo! They played in a big white tent next to the post office and we were not disappointed. Dancing + boys on stilts= total Entertainment!

We went to sleep and woke early Saturday to make our way to the line to set out the tarp. Well, this is where the sick kids  and a trip to the ER happened-but I will not bore you with the details. After a yummy breakfast burrito from Butcher & the Baker, our friends ended up standing in line and putting the tarp out for us. I eventually made it in for the tasting, and I loved local home town favorite Telluride Brewing Co, Horsefly and Ouray Brewing. Also, must mention Carbondale Brewery for their Cream Stout; very nice!

As for the music- we thought we would take my son and his friend to see Gov’t Mule on Saturday night-boys night out, but like I said, sick kids! I did get to see Anders Osborne, taste more beer, and watch Trombone Shorty (one of my favorites) before I had to go home and assume the role of nurse maid. Sadly, we were not able to attend Gov’t Mule in town park, but on the bright side you could hear Warren Haynes jamming away from my deck. So I felt like I was there.

Sunday mornings at Blues and Brews is always just so awesome. The Lee Boys are so fun to get up and dance to.

Also, I can’t say enough about Kelley Hunt– WOW! Where has she been hanging out? Download her stuff right away, you will not be disappointed. Chris Robinson Brotherhood was also a highlight, even the sickly kid managed to put up his head and say- “Hey, who is that, I know that voice.” Thank you to KOTO for streaming that for him!

Finally we have Phil Lesh and Friends.

Telluride Blues and Brews 2012

I have seen my share of Dead Shows and the spin offs from after Jerry.  But, we were all really excited by this performance, and we loved the show from beginning to end.

Despite having two sick and disappointed kids who didn’t get to see Gov’t Mule and Warren Haynes and Phil Lesh, we still had a great weekend with the absolute best weather we have seen in years. Blues and Brews definitely helped to dust this weary mom’s soul off. Thank you Blues and Brews for the ever stellar lineup and show!
