Are the kids starting to get antsy? If you’re looking to get out of town before the kids go back to school, consider visiting the John McConnell Math & Science Center in Grand Junction. The Math & Science center educates kids about math, technology, engineering, and scientific principles with hands-on exhibits that allows kids to see the principles in action. You could easily spend hours here, and it’s a great way to unleash the mad scientist in your kids.
Once inside the front door, you can almost see the glee on the faces of your kids as they get drawn right into the hands-on exhibits that are tucked into virtually every nook and cranny of several large rooms.
The bubbles exhibit is always a hit with my kids. While my youngest just has fun blowing bubbles, my older child can learn that that bubbles always come together at 120 degree angles. When one bubble pops, the other bubbles also pop or shift to maintain the 120 degree angles.
Here is the hydroelectric power exhibit with lots of levers to pull.
This is a great exhibit that demonstrates how a jet can take off and stay in the air. And then leave it to the resident Star Wars fan to creatively come up with his own take on it. ”I feel the force.”
There is a robotics station.
The staff is always available, friendly, and excited about all things math & science. Here is one of the staff walking around with a bearded dragon.
The center features more than 150 exhibits including a Van de Graaff generator, a radioactivity display, some critters and creatures that are viewable from an underwater bug cam, Hydrogen Fuel Cell, an air cannon, the ability to become a human gyroscope, an exhibit demonstrating how the earth’s magnetic poles can shift, gears, microscopes, solar panels, weather, marble runs, life-sized building displays, and sound.
