Ironton Park

Just before the summit of Red Mountain Pass is Ironton Park, a winter wonderland filled with tons of snow recreational opportunities. The Ouray County Nordic Council maintains between three and four miles of groomed trails where you can ski. You can also snowshoe, but be kind and don’t trample the ski tracks.

To get there, head south out of Ouray and towards Red Mountain Pass. When you reach the straight flat stretch about 9 miles south of Ouray, look for parking and the entrance to Ironton Park on the left side of the highway. There are several loops you can take. You can see a map here. We followed the Townsite Loop, which is groomed, mostly flat, and gives you amazing vistas to look at.

It is blissfully quiet and peaceful on this trail. At one point, we came around the corner and discovered a pretty hillside covered entirely with snow crystals.

I went here with my sister while she was visiting a couple of weeks ago. Together, we spent a long time examining these glittering slopes. And then, just because we felt like it, we did this for a long time .

It’s amazing how warm that Colorado sunshine can be!  It’s also amazing how hard it is to get up out of this position.

Ironton Park offers a great network of trails to explore.  We actually snow shoed the day we were there, but I can’t wait until we are able to get back up there with our skis and kids!
