I Love My CSA

This summer, we purchased a CSA share (Community Supported Agriculture) from Borden Farms at Pea Green. I can’t say enough good things about Borden Farms and their CSA program. It was such an awesome and interesting experience to receive a gigantic box of beautiful, organic vegetables every week throughout the summer.

On the first week, we received a choice of a flowering plant or several herb plants. I chose the flowering plant and received an enormous cascading pink petunia that I could hardly fit in the trunk of my car. Gorgeous.

During the last month, our weekly box has been truly stunning. We’ve gotten okra, beans, heirloom tomatoes, roasted chilis, jam, lettuce, leeks, cucumbers, eggplant, sweet onions, potatoes, tomatoes, melons, herbs, peppers, and more. Truly, much much more. One of my favorites in the box was the squash blossoms! In fact, I need to credit Borden Farms and their recipe for inspiring my adventures with Stuffed Squash Blossoms this summer. Not only does Borden Farms give you vegetables, but they give you recipes to go with the vegetables that you receive. I love that.

Here is a photo of what was in last week’s box, which included several onions, a week’s worth of salad greens, roasted green chilis, basil, cucumbers, heirloom & cherry tomatoes, melon, peppers, eggplants, and zucchinis:

This week was especially exciting because Borden Farms is selling their tomato seconds off for a really reasonable price. I bought this flat and made pasta sauce. And these tomatoes were hardly seconds – they were pretty much perfect.  And delicious, of course.

We will continue to get our weekly box through the end of September, and then maybe even get one bonus week depending on the weather. I will be sad when the season is over, and so will my kids. It became a ritual in our house to unpack the box and discover what was inside every week on CSA Day.

Borden Farms delivers to Montrose, Ridgway, Telluride and also to communities throughout the Roaring Fork Valley. In addition to a vegetable CSA, they offer a fruit CSA and egg shares. Borden Farms is currently taking names for next summer. If you are interested, call them at 970.874.5383 or visit their site. Whether you are familiar with CSA’s or are new to the idea, check them out.
