Whether you have small kids and it’s all you can do to make it to 10PM without passing out, or older kids that can handle the late night, there are lots of things for families to do for New Years in the San Juan Mountains.
Here are some ideas of some things you can do with your kids on New Year’s Eve:
- Check out Telluride’s Torchlight Parade and Fireworks starting at 6:30PM.
- Go see Illusionist Jason Bishop’s performance at the Palm in Telluride at 7PM.
- Check out Ouray County’s fireworks at 5:30PM.
Rent some ice skates at the Hot Springs in Ouray and go skating at the Ouray Ice Skating Rink. Then go in the Hot Springs. **Update: Just heard that due to the warm temps, the rink is a little melty. Scratch this option! **- Go sledding at Cerro Summit or elsewhere.
- Go for a nighttime snowshoe with headlamps and some hot cocoa in a thermos.
- Go bowling at Montrose Rose Bowl.
- Go to the movies – Montrose Movie listing are here. Telluride Nugget Theater listings here.
Don’t feel like going out? Try these ideas:
- Have a movie night at home – what better time to sit down and get your fix of the Star Wars or Harry Potter series? You’d never normally let your kids watch that much tv, but a special night calls for special privelages.
- Throw a party and invite your favorite families. Borrow, rent, or make your own disco ball and put on some great dance music. Your kids will love hanging out with their friends!
- Create a time capsule
- Help your kids create their New Years Resolutions.
- Blow up lots of balloons and let them drop at midnight, or bedtime
- If your family is into crafts, check out these fun ideas.
- Celebrate a New York New Years Eve. Watch the ball drop in NY, throw some confetti, blow some horns, and then put the kids to bed and call it good.
Best wishes to you and your families for a happy, healthy, prosperous and fun 2012!

Thank for all the great ideas! We are going to try the ice skates rental-didnt even know they had that?!
I was excited to hear that they are doing that too! Unfortunately, I just heard that due to the recent warm temperatures, the rink has become a little melty and is closed. Bummer! But check back in a week or two – hopefully the temps will drop soon!
