Camping in 11 Mile Canyon

A friend recently camped at 11 Mile Canyon along the South Platte River. Just outside Woodland Park, 11 mile canyon is situated along a very beautiful river with lots of granite boulders, and places for the kids to play and swim, and the fly fishing is excellent too.

Campgrounds and restrooms are nice and clean. There are several campgrounds to choose from in the area with spots along the river and in the woods. Some have power, but most do not and a non-electrical site costs $10 a night. This is a great campground with lots of room for kiddos to run and play and ride bikes on the dirt roads. The campgrounds fill up on the weekends so try to get there earlier in the day to get one.  You can also reserve ahead of time. Go here to see a list of the different campgrounds.

Another thing about 11 Mile that is appealing for families, is that if you get stuck with bad weather, Woodland Park is about 15 minutes away and they have the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center.  There also is a good place to get gelato called Mountain Scoops.

In the area, there are acres of places to explore, with tons of boulders and rocks to climb on. For the rock climbers- there is a whole guide book of climbing routes and includes routes for all degrees of difficulty. You can find sport climbing & traditional routes, with many friction routes & small holds.

My friend said her whole family had a great time. I need to put this on my list of places I’d like to visit in Colorado! From Montrose, this is a 4.5 hour drive and from Telluride it’s nearly a six hour drive. Not close, but worth it, it sounds like!
